Justice P.K. Shamsuddin Signing the Trust Deed of Kerala chapter

The most important development during this period was the setting up on January 14, 2005 of the Kerala Chapter (SITKRC) with the respected Justice P.K. Shamsuddin, former Judge of Kerala High Court, as Chairman. The other office bearers are Dr. Cyriac Thomas, former Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam: Vice Chairman, Commodore (Retd.) John P. Abraham: Vice Chairman, Mr. Riaz Ahmed: Treasurer, Mrs. Shyamala Surendran: Managing Trustee, Mrs. Sulekha Hameed, Mr. Dilip K. Mehta, Mrs. Chandra Shah, and Lt. Commander (Retd.) Avtar Singh are Trustees. SITKRC is SIT's seventh regional chapter.Tjhe newly launched SITKRC went into action immediately and collaborated with Kerala Gandhi Peace Foundation in making a meaningful observance of Gandhiji's martyrdom day by presenting a 'shraddanjali' dance by children of the Dhanarani School of Performing Arts, whose Director Mrs. Shyamala Surendran is SITKRC Managing Trustee.

Gandhi Jayanti 2004 was also joyfully celebrated by all SIT Regional Chapters with concerts of music and dance in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bangalore. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), State Bank of India and Godrej Industries co-sponsored all the six concerts as their respectful tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. In Bangalore the GJ concert was also co-sponspred by Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and India Council for Cultural Relations.

At New Delhi, at India International Centre, choirs and music groups from 12 reputed schools made a moving 'Remembering Gandhi' presentation. Former Prime Minister Dr. I.K. Gujral and Mrs. Gujral were the Chief Guests.

At Mumbai, the celebration at Ravindra Naty Mandir was Sachin Shankar's much acclaimed ballet 'Gandhi'. The honoured guests were Sr. Nana Patekar and Mr. Julio Ribiero, former Maharashtra DGP.

In may 2004, Her Excellency Mrs. Corazon Aquino (seen above with Mother Theresa), who had lead the non violent struggle that ended the Marcos dictatorship and subsequently was elected President of the Phillipines, graciously agreed to be an SIT Eminent Counsellor.

Dear. Mr. Nazareth,

Thank you very much for your letter of March 27, 2004 inviting me to be an Eminent Counsellor of Sarvodaya International Trust. I accept your invitation and I consider it an honour to be included in your Honor Panel of Eminent Counsellors.

I am sorry that it took me so long to answer your letter, but as you know we have just had our national and local elections on May 10. Fortunately, my son, Benigno Aquino III, was re-elected as congressman of the third district of Tarlac, our home province and will serve his third and last term. The votes for President, Vice President and senators are still being tabulated and hopefully we shall know the final result in three days.

Again, thank you for inviting me to be an Eminent Counsellor.

Sincerely,
Corazon G. Aquino
